turning off the life support of a loved one could be locking the damn fridge to stop my teenage son from raiding it of all the food I bought that morning!

Why would we want to send a Brit into space independently? If we're worried about finding another planet to destroy when we've finished with this one we should give all our space program money to NASA. That seems like the most economical use of the money.
