Morning all,
On this, at the moment dry, Monday Julian will have the following topics on the show for you:-
Tombstoning - A middle aged man drowns and another is seriously injured at Clacton in an incident known as tombstoning.
Violence Against Expats - There are concerns over a possible campaign against British people now living in Brittany.
Abortion - In today's health hour the discussion is on men and abortion.
Digital Switchover - Whitehaven in Cumbria is to be the first town in the UK to switch to digital TV. Are they and the rest of us ready for the switchover? Do you already have digital television?
See poll at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/vine/
Over to you now.

I have a 'Freeview' box, but rarely use it 'coz the picture keeps 'freezing' then going off. Also, I can't record one channel whilst watching another. We're told that the strength of digital signals will increase when analogue goes off, but I'll remain to be convinced on that. And, there's no satisfactory answer I've heard to my latter concern that doesn't involve my shelling out for more equipment. :protest:
On the subject of 'Tombstoning' - the clue's in the name isn't it? 'Natural Selection' I call it! :tongue3:

Good morning H
1) Why shouldn't people be allowed to risk their own lives ? What is it with all of these people who want to stop anyone doing something that may be risky ?
2) Nationalism is on the rise everywhere, so assuming this is what this is about, it's not really a surprise. This whole EU political experiment is bound to end in tears, it always was.
3) Mmmmm I'll be listening to this with interest.
4) I wouldn't mind if digital delivered better television, but it's only being used to deliver the same old rubbish, why waste the money, build some schools instead.

I was browsing through the channels on SKY on Saturday.
So many channels for holidays, shopping channels and the rest.
I have freeview and that is enough for me.
The signal comes from the box and the picture quality is excellent.
quite happy with 15-20 channels.
Why we need 100 is beyond me.

No doubt those who can't afford a new Digital TV will get some kind of grant towards it.

I'm not sure about the grant Mike, I seem to remember ages ago that it was the old who would get help, but don't quote me!
We had a Freeview box but have had Sky for about 2 years now. I don't watch that much but it's there when you want it.

Re the tombstoning I think it's mad to do it, and a waste of the resources of the rescue and medical services.

" Why shouldn't people be allowed to risk their own lives ? What is it with all of these people who want to stop anyone doing something that may be risky ? "
Agree to a point but if people want to take part in very risky activities they should pay for any rescue or treatment that may result. As Peter said 'tombstoning' is hardly the title of a low risk activity.

Tombstoning If you want to do it fine, but get private medical insurance. Anyway its just a fad, here today gone tomorrow.
Violence Against Expats The city type have taken over country life in the UK forcing out locals with the enormous increase in house prices. The French dont what the same to happen to them and as we have seen before the French take direct action when their way of life is threatened.
Abortion Too big and emotive an issue to do in one line.
Digital Switchover Its just progress good or bad and we have to move on. If decisions like this were not taken we would be still huddled around a coal fire on an evening listening to Ted Ray live from Ally Pally on the wireless.

I quite fancy huddling 'round a coal fire listening to Ted Ray live from Ally Pally on the wireless:
"You lucky people!" :toothy1:

That was Tommy Trinder's catch phrase, not Ted Ray.
I still have a coal fire, by choice, and often huddle in the winter. Trouble is, the radio is not up to the same standard as the days of Ted Ray.
