Are any of you fans of SF writing? I've just finished reading 'Against a Dark Background' by Iain M Banks which I really enjoyed. I'd previously only read his non SF stuff which I probably prefer, but I certainly can recommend him as an excellent, intelligent writer.

But does he touch the emotions in the same way as Carl Sagan did in Contact?

The book is really heavy going, covering a period of over thirty years. The movie, with Jodie Foster and John Hurt is vastly superior and there are moments where Kleenex is useful!

Saw the film, but you never know if the book will affect you in the same way.

I found with so may various characters being introduced, the book made for confusing reading. This is why I'm glad the director decided to focus on the principle characters.

The problem with Sagan is, once he starts writing, he doesn't seem to know when to stop, and, in some cases, he repeats himself when he's made his point.
