Steve Davis tells a good story of when he got the first televised 147 break, it was in the 'Lada Classic' tournament.

He went to a garage and asked 'can I have a pair of windscreen wipers for a Lada' and the bloke serving said 'yeah, that sounds like a fair swap'!

Good ole Steve.

15) the only one i could not get last night. Thought about it, I thought Cliff Thorburn did the first televised break. I am sure i watched it, it was a Sunday night in 1979 and i was having a Marstons Pedigree in a little club in Buxton. I maybe wrong tho, i might have had a bag of cheese and onion crisps as well.

15. Cliff Thorburn was the first recorded live on TV I agree but later than 79 surely. Wasn't Steve Davis's recorded in competition and then shown on TV?

Think everyone else has all the others... which of course I knew

Well done all of you. I particularly liked the thought of Motorhaed performing at the end of Trumpton Scorps :headbang:

The answers are as follows:

1. Thelma and Louise
2. Show Jumping
3. Bay of Naples
4. The Fire Brigade Band
5. Scottish National Party (SNP)
6. Cue Ball
7. Italy
8. Jerusalem
9. Tit
10. The Oval Office
11. Longleat House
12. Eeyore

Seve Davis was the first televised 147 break, Cliff Thorburn was the first to do it in a televised World Championship.

Wasn't Steve's recorded and then shown, as opposed to being seen live?

Mike Reynolds

I think you are right there, Perks, it was on ITV, I know that.

Pondgirl

According to 'Wiki', Steve's was the first max break shown on television. It took place during the 'Lada Classic' in 1982 when he was playing John Spencer (those were the days, gentleman players!) The following year Cliff Thorburn scored a 147 whilst playing Terry Griffiths during the 'Embassy' World Championship, which was also televised

It doesn't say whether or not either was shown live but that isn't relevant for the purpose of answering Mike's question "Who made snooker’s first ever televised maximum break?"

Glad to have been of assistance!

Wishing to be as pedantic as ever I would of course totally disagree!!

An event recorded on film which is subsequently shown on TV is not, in my mind, a 'televised' event from a purist point of view. After all was the Battle of Britain televised? I have seen film taken at that time shown on TV!!

But having watched the Cliff Thorburn 147 as a LIVE televised event, and again as a recording, I know which answer I prefer...

Sorry to have been of absolutely no assistance... :D

Pondgirl
02-01-2008, 06:06 PM
But...but...the definition of televised is "To broadcast or be broadcast by television" or "to send or receive by television"

Perhaps if Mike had used the word broadcast you would have found it less confusing? :D

Mind you I do find it confusing when the BBC (or any other channel) advertises shows as being 'recorded live from....' What exactly does that mean?

Ian Mac
02-01-2008, 09:43 PM
If it was recorded by TV cameras and then shown on a public broadcasting station.

It was televised.

LydiaDustbin

"January 11th 1982. Snooker.
Steve Davis compiled the first televised maximum 147 break in a match against John
Spencer in the Lada Classic, at Oldham Civic Centre, Lancashire.

January 13th 1979. Snooker.
John Spencer compiled the first maximum 147 break in competitive play in a match
against Cliff Thorburn in the Holsten Lager Tournament at the Fulcrum Centre, Slough.
This would also have been the first televised maximum, but the camera crew had left
their posts for a tea break."

For what it's worth, I'm with BP on this, anything can be televised by your definition, eg. photographs, etc. I think that just comes under having been transmitted by television. I prefer to think of the definition of televised sport as live transmision.

Mike Reynolds
02-01-2008, 10:04 PM
Blimey, Lyds, I remember that John Spencer incident (or at least, remember Dad telling me the camera crew had left for a tea break thus missing filming the maximum). I imagine he must had read about it in the papers. But as I say, I had forgotten about that, thanks for jogging my memory.

Mike xx

Boy Perkins

I had forgotten about that John Spencer one as well... all comes back.

Quizzes are often much more fun when there is more than one answer... creates debate and, like in this case, draws out interesting memories... :D
