An appropriate maintenance of your PC will keep it in a good running shape better than if you would use registry tweaks or different optimizing programs.
Here are a few advices to maintain it in good condition:
First, let’s talk about the hard disk. This part of your PC contains mechanical components, this being a reason why HDDs are slower than the rest of your components. For your hard drive to be fast and well maintained, these are my recommendations:
- About 20% of HDD’s space should be kept free, or its performance will diminish a lot. This is for every partition on it, more important one being where you have installed the operation system. Another advantage of free space would be a more rapid data defragment, which is recommended to be done often. I recommend O&O Defrag, a good tool for HDD defragment.
- HDD fragmentation should be kept at a minimum scale. You must first watch carefully at pagefile.sys and registry. For pagefile, it should be about 1.5 X RAM quantity or at least leave it on System Managed Size. For registry defragment, you could use Quicksys RegDefrag.
- For a better access speed, it is recommended to use at least 2 partitions for your hard drive. And sure, partitioning your hard disk ensures a better data protection in case of operating system fail.
Drivers are also elements that put its’ print on how your system works. For your motherboard, video card, sound board, network card etc you should always use the latest drivers posted by producers on their websites. Check those often or use a program that “sees” when your drivers can be updated, a program like SUMo, for example.
Cleaning your startup should free your RAM of unnecessary applications. For doing this, go to START, click RUN, type “ msconfig “ , hit ENTER. A box should appear, one of its tabs is STARTUP, which shows you everything that loads when Windows starts. Uncheck the ones you don’t need, you will identify them quickly.
It isn’t recommended to install and uninstall common appz often, or the system will slow down because temporary files and registry keys still remain as garbage, somewhere in your OS. You could use Revo Uninstaller for more efficient uninstall of unwanted programs, that should do the trick. Also, use Windows disk cleanup from time to time to “take the garbage to the can.”
Higher temperature than optimal one could crash or just slowdown your PC, so keep it as low as you can. This offers you a higher reliability of your components and higher performance than keeping it warm. I’ll show you how to do this in a further topic.
